NMS Labs Forensic Scientist and Laboratory Director to serve as a Member on the Pennsylvania Commission’s Advisory Committee on Wrongful Convictions


Willow Grove, PA. NMS Labs announces that Michael F. Rieders, Ph.D, Laboratory Director and Forensic Scientist, has been appointed to serve as one of the prestigious members of the Pennsylvania Joint State Government Commission’s Advisory Committee on Wrongful Convictions. The Advisory Committee will study the underlying causes of wrongful convictions and develop recommendations to present to the Senate to reduce the possibility that innocent people will be wrongfully convicted in the future.

The Advisory Committee is comprised of 30 highly respected members that represent prosecution, defense, law enforcement, corrections, judiciary, victim assistance, members of the forensic science community, and others. The first meeting is to be held March 29, 2007 in Harrisburg and the committee will make recommendations by November 30, 2008.

Dr. Michael Rieders has a broad scientific background and will be instrumental in providing a comprehensive understanding of forensic evidence in criminal cases. He is a Laboratory Director and Forensic Scientist at NMS Labs in Willow Grove, PA, which is the only independent forensic facility in the nation to be certified by both the ASCLD/LAB (American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors, Laboratory Accreditation Board) and ABFT (American Board of Forensic Toxicology). Dr. Rieders is also the President and Chief Scientific Officer of the Frederic Rieders Family Renaissance Foundation, a non-profit educational and research organization. He earned a Ph.D. in Pharmacology/ Toxicology from Thomas Jefferson University and is a graduate of Arcadia University. Dr. Michael Rieders is a member of many professional associations, including the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, Society of Forensic Toxicologists, and the VIDOCQ Society. Additionally, he is Course Director at Arcadia University in the Forensic Science Master’s Program.
